THE HISTORY LESSON

Few bands in British rock occupy quite the same corner of the musical universe as HAWKLORDS. Their story is one of reinvention, rebellion, science fiction, poetry and uncompromising artistic vision—a tale that stretches from the dying embers of the 1970s counterculture through to today's vibrant and forward-looking incarnation. More than simply custodians of Britain's greatest space-rock tradition, Hawklords have become torchbearers for a sound and philosophy that refuses to recognise the limitations of time, genre or gravity.

To understand Hawklords, you have to return to 1978. Following a turbulent period within Hawkwind, frontman Robert Calvert, guitarist Dave Brock and drummer Simon King temporarily set the Hawkwind name aside and created Hawklords. It wasn't simply a change of title—it was a completely new artistic statement. Joined by Harvey Bainbridge, Martin Griffin and keyboard player Steve Swindells, they produced the remarkable album 25 Years On, a dystopian concept inspired by technology, political paranoia and the visionary imagination of Calvert. Supported by the extraordinary visual genius of legendary designer Barney Bubbles, the accompanying live production was unlike anything British rock audiences had experienced, blending theatre, film, futuristic imagery and overwhelming sonic power into one immersive experience.

Although the original Hawklords existed for little more than a year before the musicians resumed performing under the Hawkwind banner, the name never truly disappeared. Instead, it became something of a mythical chapter in the ever-expanding Hawkwind universe—waiting for the right moment to re-emerge.

That moment arrived three decades later.

In 2008, following a tribute concert celebrating the life and work of the visionary Robert Calvert, former Hawkwind members gathered once again under the Hawklords banner. What began as a one-off celebration quickly gathered momentum. A further memorial performance for Barney Bubbles confirmed there was genuine chemistry between the musicians, and soon Hawklords had evolved into a fully functioning creative force with its own identity rather than simply revisiting the past.

At the centre of this modern incarnation has stood guitarist Jerry Richards, whose own years with Hawkwind during the late 1990s gave him an intimate understanding of Britain's most influential space-rock institution. Richards has become the band's creative driving force, steering Hawklords through constant musical evolution while respecting the pioneering spirit established by Calvert, Brock and their contemporaries. Critics have frequently likened his role to that of a cosmic navigator, guiding the mothership through ever-changing galaxies of sound while refusing to become trapped by nostalgia.

The band's history since 2008 has been characterised by continual renewal. Original reboot members including Harvey Bainbridge and former Hawkwind vocalist Ron Tree helped lay the foundations before a succession of musicians, many with direct links to the wider Hawkwind family, joined the voyage. Albums such as We Are One, Dream, Censored, R, Fusion, Six, Brave New World, Heaven's Gate, TIME, Space, Relativity and Faith have demonstrated that Hawklords are not content to live in the shadow of past glories. Instead, they have built one of the most prolific and adventurous catalogues in contemporary British progressive rock, blending thunderous riffs, soaring synthesisers, spoken-word passages, cinematic soundscapes and fearless social commentary into an unmistakably modern interpretation of space rock. Their 2015 album R became a significant success within the UK progressive rock charts, confirming that Hawklords remained a vital creative force rather than a heritage act.

Today, Hawklords enter another exciting chapter. Celebrating eighteen years since the band's rebirth, the latest line-up features Jerry Richards alongside dynamic new vocalist Kriss Gordelier, whose work with progressive metal outfit Marquis de Sade injects fresh energy and contemporary firepower into the band's already formidable sonic arsenal. The current line-up continues Hawklords' long-standing tradition of embracing change, proving once again that evolution has always been central to their DNA.

This latest UK tour also heralds the arrival of the brand-new studio album, Signals, due for release in late October 2026, promising yet another leap into unexplored musical territory. Alongside brand-new material, audiences can expect a spectacular journey through the band's remarkable history, featuring songs from Jerry Richards' years with Hawkwind, classic compositions by Robert Calvert—including material from the legendary Silver Machine era—and tributes to the late, great Nik Turner, whose saxophone, flute and irrepressible spirit helped define the original sound of British space rock.
