ROMEO'S DAUGHTER – THE RETURN OF BRITISH AOR ROYALTY

Some bands arrive at the right time. Some bands arrive before the world is ready for them.

Romeo's Daughter may well belong to the second category.

When the British melodic rock giants first emerged in the mid-1980s, they possessed everything required for global superstardom: world-class songs, a stunning frontwoman, exceptional musicianship and the backing of one of the most successful producers in music history. It was no surprise that the legendary Robert John "Mutt" Lange — the architect behind classic albums by Def Leppard, AC/DC, Bryan Adams and later Shania Twain — became involved with the band's debut recordings after being blown away by their songwriting. Alongside Grammy-winning songwriter John Parr, he helped shape a debut album that remains one of the crown jewels of British AOR.

Released in 1988, Romeo's Daughter exploded onto the American market with the infectious "Don't Break My Heart", a Billboard Hot 100 hit that introduced Leigh Matty's unmistakable voice to audiences across the Atlantic. The band's combination of polished hooks, emotional depth and radio-friendly rock immediately set them apart from their contemporaries.

What followed only enhanced the band's growing legend.

Their song "Wild Child" was hand-picked and recorded by American rock superstars Heart for their multi-million-selling album Brigade, becoming one of the most recognisable songs associated with the band's catalogue. Meanwhile "Heaven In The Back Seat" found a worldwide audience after being featured in the Hollywood horror blockbuster A Nightmare On Elm Street 5 before later being recorded by Eddie Money. Bonnie Tyler would also record Romeo's Daughter material, further confirming the extraordinary quality of Craig Joiner's songwriting.

Yet despite critical acclaim and industry admiration, changing musical fashions conspired against them. As grunge swept through the early 1990s, many melodic rock bands found themselves fighting against a tide they could not control. Romeo's Daughter released the magnificent "Delectable" in 1993 — now widely regarded by many AOR fans as a lost masterpiece — before eventually stepping away from the spotlight.

But great bands never truly disappear.

In 2009, after eighteen years apart, Romeo's Daughter reunited for what was intended to be a one-off appearance at the legendary Firefest Festival. The response was overwhelming. Fans greeted them like returning heroes and the chemistry between Leigh Matty, Craig Joiner and Andy Wells was as powerful as ever. The reunion sparked one of the most successful comeback stories in British rock.

The albums that followed proved this was no nostalgia act.

"Rapture" (2012), "Spin" (2015) and most recently "Slipstream" (2023) have all been met with widespread critical acclaim. Reviewers praised the band's refusal to simply recreate past glories, instead producing fresh, contemporary melodic rock while retaining the unmistakable Romeo's Daughter identity. One reviewer described their songwriting as "returning with a vengeance", while another praised Leigh Matty's "sumptuous vocals" and Craig Joiner's enduring songwriting brilliance.

At the centre of it all remains Leigh Matty.

Long regarded as one of the finest female voices in British rock, Leigh was voted among Classic Rock Magazine's greatest female rock singers and more recently earned a place in Classic Rock's list of the greatest AOR voices of all time. Her voice remains one of the most distinctive and emotionally powerful instruments in melodic rock — equally capable of delivering heart-breaking ballads and arena-sized anthems.

The live reputation of Romeo's Daughter has only grown stronger with age. Reviewers consistently describe the band as being "at the top of their game", "a force to be reckoned with" and capable of "blowing the roof off" venues while making the whole performance appear effortless. Critics regularly marvel at how the band combine absolute professionalism with genuine warmth and connection to their audience.

Now Barnoldswick Music & Arts Centre welcomes Romeo's Daughter back for TWO very special nights.

In an intimate room where every note, every lyric and every emotion can be felt up close, audiences will experience one of Britain's finest melodic rock bands performing songs that have stood the test of time. Expect classics including "Wild Child", "Don't Break My Heart", "Stay With Me Tonight" and "Heaven In The Back Seat", alongside highlights from their acclaimed modern albums.
